Fish Out of Water
For my Pictures for Communication class, we were assigned to make a picture that would go at the head of a short story. The storyline and setting were up to us to decide, so I chose to make an illustration for an imaginary story about a mid-1900s university for magicians. The main character is a freshman trying to pass his aptitude tests to move onto the next year, and to do so he must conjure fire. He is not doing very well, as you can see, and his advisor is not enjoying his student's lack of progress.
This project was very enjoyable, especially because I had to do extensive research about period clothing, hair styles, and furniture. Additionally, I did a little bit of investigation into 1920's slang, and I found out that the term "fish" was used to refer to a college freshman, hence the title.
